The grapes will naturally seek out the sunlight so with a little helping hand they will flourish.
The growing grapes will be very heavy over time so the structure they are on needs to be tough and strong. You should build and complete your vine structure before you begin planting and growing your grapes home style.
Another important factor for you to consider is the condition of your soil as the grapes will need a good soil to grow from. You will need poor drainage as growing grapes flourish if kept moist at all times. When you go to plant the vine you will need to dig a large hole to ensure that the roots can stretch and grow.
Ideally you should try to soak the vines roots for a couple of hours before you choose to plant them so they are well watered before going in the ground. You should plant your grape vines in the early spring which will allow them to find their own path and grow well.
You should not expect to have a harvest in the first year as your grapes are growing and the vines are becoming established. You can trim your vines which will encourage the grapes to grow faster and provide you with a harvest the following year.
Although you may never be able to harvest enough grapes to stock your wine cellar they do make a nice alternative to grow in your garden. With the right care in the beginning you can have healthy and fantastic grapes.
